Abstract:________________________________________________

Eregli Iron & Steel Works Inc., Erdemir for short, the largest of Turkey’s integrated steel plants, went into operation in 1965, in Eregli, a small harbor town on the Black Sea coast.
In Erdemir, equipment failures, corrosions, heat losses and wear of refractors are determined by Thermal Camera since 1994. It is used as a predictive maintenance tool. Obtained data are analyzed with the Irwin-5.1 software program and results were distributed to related departments via company Intranet system.
Especially, thermal differences in cooling systems helps to calculate heat losses that are directly related to energy consumption using this output, Sankey Diagrams are drawn easily.

Re-heating furnace energy efficiency : % 77,63

As a result of our studies, We have got %74.63 energy efficiency at the slab furnace III, in addition to this, we have calculated %0.47 heat losses from the furnace wall and have a chance to find the exact point of heat losses on the wall by using thermal camera.

According to our results, some precaution has been taken for reducing fuel consumption and having more efficiency by using by-product gasses. For reducing our heat losses, high quality insulator material is used in the zones which in heat losses most.Especially, after changing isolator materials of cooling pipes at slab furnace, fuel is saved and maintaining period of the furnace is made longer and more efficiency because of refractor material.These thermal camera measurements shows the thickness of refractor on the furnace wall, and it gives us some information to have decision about maintaining before starting. In addition, the torpedoes which carry the hot metal, is controlled for corrosion of refractor thickness by thermal camera measurements. Also heat losses can be found by using the camera at all departments.
