Temperature of
Hot Packs for Medical Treatment

The surface temperature of a newly designed pack
containing Phase Change Material (PCM) was
measured and compared with the temperature
course of a traditional parafango pack. The
decrease of surface temperature over time was
nearly identical in both packs. However, higher
starting values were found with parafango packs
than with PCM packs after storing the packs for
12 hours in an oven at 55°C. After storing the
PCM packs at 70° C, the maximum surface
temperature was 4 degrees below the maximum
temperature of parafango packs stored at 55°C.
The temperature characteristics of the new PCM
pack are not superior to traditional parafango
packs.
