56/5 Pulsating heat pipes: study on a two-phase loop

Summary

A pulsating heat pipe (PHP) is a complex heat transfer device with a strong thermo-hydraulic coupling. To better understand its operational characteristics, a two-phase loop, heated at one end and cooled at the other and having no internal wick structure is constructed (ID: 2.0 mm, working fluid: ethanol). It is concluded that the loop does essentially represent the thermo-fluidic characteristics of real multi-turn PHP. Dynamic two-phase instabilities are also present; although the number of turns in a real PHP increase the perturbations. Existence of an optimum number of turns for a given heat input is explained. Also, it is shown that classical thermodynamics seems not to be sufficient for system analysis. The performance is strongly related to two-phase flow patterns. The role of gravity in the operation is clarified.
